Overview
Eric has been a Starting Strength Coach since 2014 and has spent the last 7 years as a Strength & Conditioning Coach at Westminster Strength & Conditioning, a Starting Strength Affiliate Gym and one of the strongest and busiest private gyms on the east coast. In addition to day-to-day coaching at WSC, Eric manages the Power Athlete program and the Master’s Strength Programs at WSC, and serves as the strength & conditioning coach to roughly a dozen local high school and AAU teams.
Westminster Strength & Conditioning is a Starting Strength Affiliate Gym and one of the strongest and busiest gyms in the country. Whether you are a weekend warrior looking to increase strength & endurance, an aspiring athlete looking to increase performance on the field, or an older adult looking to increase strength and improve quality of life, there is simply no better place to reach your goals.
WSC training specialties include:
General strength training:
For the general strength trainee who’s looking to get stronger, improve body composition, and improve quality of life. We train everyone from the 30 year-old to their 80 year-old grandmother and everyone in between. We build a strength program around your goals and help you get there.
Strength & Conditioning:
Athletes looking to improve strength, power, speed, and agility need to look no further. Our strength & conditioning program serves over 200 local athletes ranging from 7th/8th graders getting ready for high school sports, to D1 athletes, to entire teams through the year-round sports calendar. Get on the same program and get strength and conditioning programming for your offseason, preseason, or inseason training.
Competitive strength athletes:
For those wishing to compete in powerlifting, weightlifting, or both (supertotal), WSC offers the best coaching you can find. Members from our powerlifting team hold a combined 9 USAPL American Records, and we are a training center for East Coast Gold Weightlifting, the largest weightlifting team in the country, winners of 21 combined national championships.
Rehabilitation/Post physical therapy
Traditional physical therapy often fails to return someone to adequate strength and function by the time insurance runs out. This is especially problematic for older adults who never quite regain function and ease of daily activities. Through our work with local PTs and Orthopedics, we have successfully rehabbed a multitude of physical issues and guided trainees to levels of function they never thought would be achievable
Women’s and Master’s strength training
Our Women’s Strength and Master’s Strength programs at WSC are one-of-a-kind and we are excited to bring these programs to people who cannot be at the gym several times per week. Our Women’s Strength program is 12 weeks of coaching and programming by women, for women of all ages and abilities. Whether you want to run a mile faster, keep up with your kids/grandkids, or compete in the next powerlifting competition. If you’re hesitant to begin strength training, or all you know about strength training is from Body Pump, this is a perfect introduction. Our Master’s Strength program works with older adults of all levels, helping them maintain function and independence into their 60’s, 70’s, and beyond.
Training is delivered via TrueCoach, where programming is given and training videos are uploaded and critiqued. WSC has two levels of online coaching membership:
1 – Novice (first 1-3 months) – $200/mo
-
Training delivered weekly with 2 or more video check-ins per week. Every session will be coached with video feedback.
2 – Intermediate/Advanced (after novice phase) – $125/mo
-
Training delivered weekly or in blocks with 1 or more check-in(s) per week. Coaching and video feedback is given weekly.

I was a member of WSC for 3 years before moving to California and I have nothing but positive things to say about Eric, Beau and Angie. To this day I have had Eric Shugars do online coaching for me and am still getting stronger, 6 years into training. With his programming I have been able to Squat 325 for 3 singles & Press 127.5 for 3 singles, which is pretty damn good for a female. You won’t regret working with Shugars.
Creative programming to work around injuries and he knows what he is doing. Super nice guy too.
I went from dealing with daily back pain to being comfortable throughout my day. Can’t wait to get back in the gym!
Nothing much to say other then hes a good coach. With his guidance I went from nothing to a much more healthy person.
I heave benefited from Eric’s coaching for several years, in conjunction with the staff at Westminster Strength And Conditioning and as an individual client. As a member of a full-time major metro SWAT team, my training needs are more complex than many athletes or enthusiasts. Eric has helped me balance strength with the conditioning needed to run 9 min miles (plural) with 25-30lbs of equipment over mixed terrain. He has helped me balance these needs in a recovery environment inhibited by reduced sleep and long hours in my late 30s. I vigorously recommend Eric to my fellow first responders; his training will help you stay safe and improve longevity and quality of life.
I was so impressed with both his knowledge and coaching style, that I sent my 77 year old mother to train with him!
Eric is awesome! He has been training my now 18 yo daughter and I for about 3 1/2 years. He is extremely knowledgeable, and personable. He works around injuries, arthritis and life. I am stronger than I have ever been, and my daughter is a strong, confident young woman headed to university to play soccer. Eric goes the extra mile, everyday. He and Westminster Strength and Conditioning are the absolute best!
Eric has trained myself and my 16 year old daughter for multiple years now. He is great in any aspect of coaching, whether it be coming back from an injury, getting stronger to compete at a high level or just wanting to be in shape. He understands you goals and aspirations and develops a training plan to suit your needs and abilities. I would highly recommend Eric as a trainer.
Eric is amazing at what he does! Even if you have a busy schedule, he can create programs that work for you and still allow you to keep getting stronger. He understands your needs and goals and will help you meet and surpass them. Hands down one of the best!
